THEODORA | "what were you doing on castle grounds, you filthy rat?"
honestly, a fair question. and to be frank, theodora had a good answer-- but as she would discover, it wasn't quite what they were looking for. something told her that the swarm of angry royal guards wouldn't believe that she just happened to pass the throne room while sneaking towards the kitchen. after pissing off her usual supplier, theo had to resort to dramatic measures in order to eat this week. the merchants in the market were starting to recognize her face appearing around the same time part of their stock seems to disappear. hence, her attempt at getting food where she knew there was a surplus.
theo knew the castle grounds like the back of her palm, despite not actually passing the gates for years. the security was tight-- but she took great lengths to memorize their rotations before daring to trespass. then a friend on the inside helped her slip through and off she went... only to be body slammed to the floor by a pair of guards, and then mobbed by another ten when she tried to make a break for it.
with her hair bunched up in a rugged man's fist as she was dragged across the marble floor, the young woman began to panic. she clawed and bit and screamed to no avail, knowing full well her fate if she was thrown into prison. she had crafted her ploy so meticulously well, how was she caught so quickly? the number of guards had nearly tripled since the day before, something the thief could have never foreseen.
despite her struggles, she eventually ended up in a tiny cell on the lowest level of the palace. that's where she could contemplate this single question, one that was thrown and hoarsely yelled in her ear during the entire scuffle, which took place nearly two hours ago, if her sense of time wasn't already skewed by the overwhelming smell of rotting flesh and feces. curled up in the corner of the dark, wet cell, she was also left to wonder how her harmless attempt to feed herself went south which such force.
she lifted her head when she heard footsteps down the hall, followed by desperate pleas of those trapped in the cells before her. the rattling of metal bars and thick, wooden doors seemed to echo throughout the entire chamber. they stopped outside of her door, causing theodora to rise to her feet out of curiosity and alarm. once the door opened, she was once again surrounded, handcuffed and forced through the opening as she stumbled over her own feet.
"oi! didya finally realize the mistake you're making?" her complaints fell on deaf ears, for she was continuously forced down the hallway and out of the dungeon without a word in her direction. the grim faces on all the guards, and the sheer amount of them sent to retrieve a harmless thief caused theo's heart to skip a few beats. "i didn't do anything wrong. i just wanted a bit of food, i know there's some to spare!"
the sudden light blinded her as they reached one of the courtyards, her dull brown eyes proving it difficult to adjust from the darkness of the cell, where little light managed to ever reach. the sudden irony of the situation-- as she gazed upon where she once played as a child while being dragged against her will-- was enough to make her mouth feel dry with a tinge of bitter resentment. this was certainly not how she imagined a reunion tour, if she had ever wished for such a thing to take place.
it didn't take long for theo to realize her final destination was the throne room. if there was a person (or persons, in this instance) on this earth that she would rather starve than ever see again, it would be those who lay within that room. she was well aware that the king and queen were both absent on a diplomatic trip to quideth in order to smooth over growing war tensions and concerns. which meant she would have to face arthur himself. suddenly, death by hanging seemed far more probable and welcoming than a few moments earlier.
while theodora assumed the prince had long forgotten an insignificant peasant girl, she had not forgotten. forever seared in her mind is the day she was barred from these very walls, thrown out like nothing more than a puppy he had become bored of. perhaps she could use this single oppurtunity to spit in his face, or scuff his expensive shoes. petty acts indeed, but at least she could die with a tragic sense of successful vengeance. |

| arthur could feel the blood boiling within his very flesh as he paced the large room quietly, his eyes fixated on an unknown point that stretched before him. anxiously chewing on his bottom lip, he gripped his fingertips tightly together beneath his palms, knuckles slowly turning a pasty shade of white. perspiration slowly slid down his collarbone, the nape of his neck coated with the substance as well. to say that he was anxious would be an understatement- he was downright terrified. the room around him seemed to rotate as he managed to stop himself, slowly lifting his gaze from the ground. his chamberlain stood before him, an equally distressed expression reflecting back to the prince. "are you sure that it's gone, my lord? we've... we've kept it in a private exhibition for centuries, guarded with extreme care..." he muttered under his breath, which caused arthur's eyes to waver fluctuate almost immediately, a burning rage hidden beneath them.
before arthur could stop himself, his outstretched arm had latched upon the butler's collar, pulling him towards him with an almost inhumane speed. he was gritting his teeth, breath rattling inside his ribcage. "well, where the hell else is it supposed to be? it isn't there.... i want every crevice of this kingdom searched immediately until we find it. that's an order." arthur had hissed, before releasing his grip, wiping the back of his hand on the appearingly luxurious attire he presented upon himself.
the prince watched as the opposing man scurried off, his eyes glittering with an undeniable anger. he knew that he had no right to order about the staff of the palace on any other day, but due to the fact that his parents were away attending to formal business matters, it was he who held that responsibilty. and to be quite frank, the young man enjoyed every second of it- other than the fact that he had lost one of the most vital instruments used to make sure that he would permanently have that power. the man's coronation was coming, and all of the kingdom of saed had been aware of this. of course there would be complications- and this was only one of them. the sceptor of their domain had been stolen right beneath their noses, something that no one would have been able to expect.
arthur cursed under his breath, slamming his fist against the wall as he turned sharply once again to face the broad window that swept before him, exhibiting the wide view of the kingdom and all it's provinces. he sighed slowly, pressing his hand against the glass, his eyes slit like that of a cat's. "just a little longer... a little longer, and it will all be mine." he muttered a sneer forming upon his lips as he allowed his forehead to rest upon the pane.
as if on cue, arthur could hear the sounds of muffled voices from a short distance away, and he began making his way back to the large throne that had been situated in the center of the room. he stepped onto it, his fingertips tracing the golden ridges of the armrests, before he sat, his stature cold and unwelcoming. there was an aura of defiance approaching, which arthur could feel within the tenseness of the room. he could distinguish a girl's voice which seemed to sound oddly familiar, along with the sounds of struggling and the clambering of handcuffs against skin. he cleared his throat, waiting to reveal the citizen who had dared to steal the sceptor. what he hadn't expected was theodora.
the large, regal white doors had bursted open, revealing the girl held between the arms of two burly looking guards of his own. the prince could not stop his eyes from widening suddenly, his lips parting momentarily. he stared at her for what had seemed like an eternity, before watching as the guards pushed her onto her knees, before kneeling themselves. arthur swallowed suddenly, realizing that he had portrayed a look of fear for longer than he had wanted to. "my lord... we found her roaming the castle grounds and wanted to make sure you knew. she could know about the sceptor as well, although we didn't see anything on her." one of the guards said, his voice monotonous. arthur nodded suddenly, stepping forward from his throne before staring down at her, gulping once again before nodding.
memories slowly flooded throughout archie's body as he reached down towards her, lifting her chin up to face his own features, his eyes searching through her own, thumb caressing her cheek with grace. this girl had been special to him like no other- his only companion in childhood, and one of the only people who had ever been able to get close to the royal family. it had been ages ago, of course, but her mother and his own had been extremely close, before she had passed away. arthur felt a sudden swell of guilt begin to rise within him as he recoiled slowly, as if afraid. he was afraid of the sudden emotions that had blossomed within him, his heart throbbing painfully in his chest. "i see... thank you. that will be all." he whispered, his voice raspy as he watched them bow, leaving himself and theo alone.
silence ripped through the air momentarily, before arthur spoke up once again, acting as if he was oblivious to their past, although his knowledge of her had been radiating off of him. "is there any valid excuse that you have for being on castle grounds, or will you willingly be led to the cells once again? there is something much more important than this that i must attend to, and i'm afraid that i can't be wasting any more time here with you." this statement had been a lie- as he watched theo carefully, he wanted nothing more than to converse, to reconcile with her once again. he inhaled sharply, unable to face her any longer for fear that he would succumb to the urges that had been welling up inside of him. "i thought we made it clear that i wouldn't need to be seeing you anymore a while ago, miss theodora." he stated coldly, his own words tearing at his heartstrings.

THEODORA | despite her time here at the palace, theo had never entered the throne room. it always remained strictly off limits, which had only further peaked her little mind's interest. she vividly remembered arthur and her endeavors and plots to try and sneak in-- just for one look. of course, eventually, he was allowed in without a blink of an eye, but that curiosity continued to eat away at theodora. every time they met up, he use to describe to her the throne and the stained class and adornments of such magnificence.
to be fair, her younger self certainly didn't imagine she would finally be in the midst of such luxury while being forced to her knees with her hands chained in front of her. the prince's words back then certainly didn't do such marvel justice-- but theo stopped herself from ogling. it would only infuriate her more. she was well aware that she needed to keep a level head, keep any emotion that dared to surface bottled up. she refused to give arthur brious the satisfaction of seeing her genuinely hurt.
"my lord... we found her roaming the castle grounds and wanted to make sure you knew. she could know about the scepter as well, although we didn't see anything on her." those words made her raise her eyebrows ever so slightly, but she didn't lift her head. the scepter? it was in saed tradition that every coronation that the prince received the crown with the scepter clutched in his right hand. it was a ritual so old that folktales spoke of it-- the rod itself has no true age, which makes it virtually priceless. to have to stolen... well, the prince could not truly become king. sure, he could receive a temporary title, much like he does in hi parent's absence, but the country's people would most likely never recognize him as their true ruler. it was just the way things worked, especially when many of the citizens are bound to the books of old saed as they are to a bible.
she was jolted out of her jumbled process of slowing connecting the dots when she felt a hand touch her face. his palm was soft, and she would of nearly considered it comforting if it wasn't so cold. his touch chilled her to the bone, and theodora dared to make eye contact. face to face with the man she blamed for all the cruelty she endured-- it was difficult to keep the tide of emotion that seemed to wash over her. he didn't look much different than she remembered. the baby face was replaced by a clean cut jawline and sharp features, and the childlike wonder in his eyes that she found so charming when she was young was long gone.
she was so overcome, that for a few second's theo couldn't muster a word. a flash of recognition, of pain and hurt that she hadn't felt since she was in her early teens swept over her, momentarily crushing the fervor of revenge and anger that usually consumed her. she saw it in his face, as well-- he definitely knew who she was. but this was all in a few, quick moments. snapping back to her senses, theo pulled her face away, giving the guard a snide look as he reluctantly let her go and the pair moved to leave them alone. the doors shut with a loud thump, and nothing but tension-filled silence followed.
"so i hear. you've lost your magic wand," she sneered as she maneuvered herself off her knees and onto her feet. "oh, woo is me! you can't become king without it, can ya?" theo could no longer hide the heavy bitterness in her tone. she examined the cuffs, tugging at them to test their strength. she flicked an object between her index and forefinger-- a pin that she had swiped from a guard's brooch during one of their many scuffles, and began to pick the lock. "with your coronation around the corner and your mommy and daddy gone, this looks awfully bad, doesn't it, archie?"
she eventually freed herself and the chains fell to the floor with a loud clank. rubbing at her wrists, theo angrily kicked them across the room. "dreadful things. not nearly as enjoyable as they are in a more... private setting," she hummed, mainly to cover up the rage in her sudden outburst. theodora finally glanced in arthur's direction, her face morphing into a stony, cold expression.
"don't worry, your highness. i got the message loud and clear a long time ago. my presence here was merely a misunderstanding between your dimwitted guards and i." the sour sarcasm in her voice was gone, replaced by a severity that surprised theodora herself. she was well aware of the grave situation she put herself in. if the scepter was truly stolen, and she was the only suspect... well, they wouldn't hesitate to get some answers out of her using any means necessary. merely sitting in that mold-ridden encasement nearly proved too much. the peasant girl would be lying if she said she didn't know anything. word travels fast, street scum such as herself like to talk. but if all she had heard was true, then the last thing she needed was to put herself right smack dab in the middle of royal heist.
unfortunately, it seemed as if she had done just that. |

| the prince could hear theodora maneuvering herself onto her feet, his chin slowly tilting towards her direction as he cocked his head to listen to her, his lips pursed tightly together at an attempt to maintain his current level of counterfeit calmness. her words seemed to roll quickly of her tongue, filled with hidden anger and betrayal that arther felt hitting him like a club to his chest. he winced at her mention of the scepter, his palms tightening into two tightly gripped fists that remained at his sides, his body still facing away from hers. how carelessly she seemed to talk of the object, as if it were just a mere toothpick, when it held more importance to him than anything else in the world. he inhaled sharply within his nostrils, feeling as if the edges of his vision had been tinted with scarlet.
before he could stop himself, he had whipped around once again, his jaws clenched tightly together as he glared at her, his upper lip twitching slightly. "for your information, things will be just fine without my family, or the scepter. i'm capable of handling things on my own." the word archie struck him suddenly, sending a jolt of nostalgia through him once again. theodora had been one of the only people who had ever recently used this name directly to his face-hearing it now, the prince suddenly felt an immense wave of gratitude for her arrival. he pondered over these instances, wondering if he would have forgotten them if fate had not brought the girl back once again.
arthur noticed as the handcuffs slowly slipped from her wrists, rising from his sudden out-of-mind state. she was smart, cunning and extremely witty, and he knew all of these things far too well. her comment left him flushed as he felt his ears begin to burn, cheeks rosy as he sputtered over his own words, his fists taut. he wouldn't let her get the upper hand, no matter how much it had strained him to argue like this. "listen here, miss. my guards know exactly what they're doing when they see a trespasser in the palace. and that seems to be just what you were doing-trespassing." his lips curled into a twisted smile once again as he crossed his arms over his chests, hiding the display of anger he had flourished just seconds before.
the man ambled forth slowly, his feet sliding against the polished marble floor with ease as he stopped short of her, staring down at her with slitted eyes. they twinkled with passion, burning embers seeming to emit from their ghastly depths. he kicked the handcuffs away with ease, not surprised that she had been able to free herself from their hold as quickly as she had.
her words sunk within him slowly, resting on the surface of his skin before he finally allowed them to seep deeper. did she really know nothing of the septer or of it's disappearance? the thought of it sent chills crawling throughout his spine, but he refused to accept this false reality. even if it was true, he would not let her off the hook as easily as this. "out of the shred of reverance i have left for you, i'll offer you a deal." he grinned now, flashing his pearly white teeth towards her direction. "since you seem to know a lot about breaking and entering into sacred places, you will help me and my royal guards find the sceptor that has been stolen. in return, i won't cut off your head." he turned once again before reaching out towards the looming throne, allowing his fingers to once again skim against the smooth velvet padding. "sounds quite fair to me." he muttered shortly after, before chuckling under his breath.
without haste, the prince's chamberlain quickly bustled into the room, and arthur's mood immediately dropped as he once again became solemn and grim, nodding in his direction carefully. "my lord, i'm afraid there's been a misunderstanding-" the butler mumbled, his voice dying down slowly as he noticed the opposing man's stern gaze. "i'm aware. but, she will be useful on our journey to find the staff." arthur said wearily, as if unamused by the whole ordeal, although he truly was apprehensive about the situation. he walked towards the walls with delicacy, as if he moved with dancer's feet, gliding against the floor with grace before grasping a sizable sword from it's mantleplace, watching as the light from the window glinted against it's smooth metal surface, reflecting his own features before him.
"now tell me, dear theodora," he spoke up once again, lifting his head to look at her once more. "what do you know about my scepter?" his words were sharp and clean-cut as he glared at her once more, fixated on her every movement.
although he couldn't stand her presence, couldn't bear to look at her without feeling his soul sink beneath his feet, he knew that he needed her, no matter how much he had denied it.

THEODORA | theo knew how to read people. she had to, in order to survive. stealing the pocketwatch of a fast-paced, distracted merchant was far easier than trying to swipe some coins off the same man if he was angry. she needed to be able to tell if she was in immediate danger with a quick glance of her surroundings. a shifty look, a hunched over figure, attire that stood out against the plainclothes of the town-- all signs for her to book it as soon as possible. needless to say, when she noticed the react coming from the prince, that sneering, snide piece of shit buried inside of her finally felt some peace. naturally, she continued to press him, merely out of spite and being unnecessarily difficult.
"is that so?" she tone held an air of superiority, as if she knew something he didn't. "hardly anybody takes you seriously now, how do you think the citizens of saed will feel knowing their to-be king may be crowned with disregard to such a cherished tradition?" theodora contemplated, tapping her finger to her chin. she moved away from him to inspect the walls that were adorned with gold and burgundy drapings. she laced her fingers through it, admiring the soft, velvety texture before unhinging it from the wall, twirling and draping it around her body. she dramatically leaned against the marble fixture, the expensive fabric hanging off her shoulders as she lifted a hand to her forehand in mock despair. "oh, and your poor, beloved future queen. what will she do knowing so married such an insolent, foolish man who can't even tell his right from left, nevermind protect the only thing standing between him and the throne," she let out a laugh at the very thought of it.
arthur caught her attention at the mention of a deal. theodora mindlessly ran her fingers through the curtain around her body as she contemplated his words, the mocking manner in her demeanor fading as he went on. while this very much could work in her favor, theo found it difficult to easily give up the chance to see him fret over the loss of the scepter. besides, if she did help him, how could she be so sure he wouldn't betray her like his family did more than a decade prior? admitting she may know where the royal heirloom could be heading held the potential of getting herself thrown in prison instead. but something told her that saying no could lead to a far worse fate.
her attention towards to the man who hastily entered, evidently flustered and perspiring from seemingly every orifice. "you heard him. it's a misunderstanding," she interjected, seizing her oppurtunity to unravel herself from this mess. "i've committed no crime worthy of death, your highness," she held a seriousness that she lacked moments prior, abruptly dropping the velvet that had been draped across the curvatures of her body. even if, in some alternate world, she held any inch of desire to help him-- it would put her in more peril than anything. "if i'm seen with the likes of you, i'll have far more to worry about than some bejeweled stick," the thought sent a chill down her spine. theodora was no novice at the art of pissing people off, but there were certain exceptions from her mission to see virtually everyone around her suffer. there were those who roamed the streets that not even the likes of her dared to mess with. and if they caught wind of a mole? well, being hung for trespassing would be a light sentence.
but lady luck had abandoned her long ago. the young woman's stomach rumbled loudly, almost echoing throughout the chamber. her eye twitched and color rose to her cheeks. with all of the sudden excitement, the brunette nearly forgot the real reason she snuck onto palace grounds to begin with. refusing to look arthur in the eye, she folded her arms over her chest with an inaudible huff.
"maybe i know something. maybe i don't. maybe with the right offer, something might come back to me," she nonchalantly shrugged her shoulders as she spoke. despite her surface-level uninterest, she was secretly hoping he would take the bait. she came all this way for nothing more than a discarded loaf of bread, why not try and get something a bit more for her troubles? after she told him what she knows, she could slip away unnoticed before the prince got anymore bright ideas. the further she got from this dreadful place, the better off they both will be. a growing anxiety seemed to fester within her, one that appeared when he first crossed over the gate. she spent years building this facade to keep others out-- theodora didn't need a wave of nostalgia of forgotten fondness from seeing nothing more than just an old rose bush to ruin her image. |

| prince arthur was one of the most unqualifiable people to be even given the title of a prince, let alone to earn the label as king. the man knew this himself, but also knew that he was exceedingly hungry for authority and dominance over others, which is a very inconvient pairing to have for a persons' personal. as theodora spoke openly about this, he felt his internal organs twisting inside of him, a sickening feeling spreading across his body. did she really think he cared about the people of saed, let alone their thoughts of him? the prince scoffed and rolled his eyes at her, but did not object to her statement. arthur knew that he had been able to keep this sinful and vile appearance of his away from the public's eye, but he could not help but admit that his efforts had been fading away recently.
he watched her with eyes of solid steel as she made her way to the curtain, draping herself within the thick, velvetty tecture. the man swallowed suddenly, his recently damp mouth drying up almost instantly. she was gorgeous, her previously child-like frame developing into what now looked like a much more curvacious and womanly figure. he realized he had been staring, before sharply looking away, his eyes widening slightly. what the hell had he been thinking? he hated her, he was absolutely positive- or at least, he needed to hate her, for her sake and his own.
at the mention of a future queen, arthur directed his attention towards her once more, aware of the now fretful demeanor that his butler was currently portraying. the servant had most likely never seen arthur being so haughty around anyone like this, so it must have been a surprise. but the prince payed no attention, furthermore allowing his piercing gaze to rest on the thief once again. a future queen? what on earth was she going on about? he chewed on his bottom lip carefully, his cheeks reddening at her disdainful words towards him. "there's no need for you to worry about what my future queen thinks of me. she will love me no matter how insolent i may be, therefore proving to be somewhat worth my time." he taunted, his eyes twinkling once again.
their belittlement of each other seemed to be almost comical to arthur, and he enjoyed playing these types of 'games' with theodora. in fact, the prince realized only then that she was the first person he had ever been able to fully communicate with in quite some time. other than his servants and the royal family, prince arthur had been kept secluded from the public eye, as if he was a precious gem that only some could harness the privelage to see. theo, being one of the servant's kin, had been able to recieve this honor, in fact being his only childhood friend- however, after her mother had died, she had been whisked away so suddenly that even arthur had been stunned by her dismissal. he had been unable to display this, however, for he was royalty- and according to common nomenclature, a peasant and royalty must never coincide.
the sudden lightheartedness had once again vanished within the room as theodora turned down the offer immediately, proving a point that even he could not bash. her words shook him slightly as he watched her movements, the curtains once again returning to their origin as she stepped forth. he blinked, mute as he suddenly felt defeat washing over him. before he could agree to this statement of hers, letting her free from his grasp once again, it seemed to him that fate had finally taken it's course upon her.
the loud rumbling of hunger emanated from theodora's stomach, so extravigant that arthur's eyes broadened slightly, a small smile forming on his soft pink lips. her embarrassed response had tied the knot for him, and he let out a sizable laugh, pressing the sword that he had been holding into it's hilt once again. he made his way towards her once again, sauntering forth like a cat. "oh, my dear theodora- your wish is my command. i'll give you anything you please. all for your consent..." he grinned sharply, before swivelling his head towards his attendant. "please deliver two servings of foie gras, warm lobster with a helping of butter, a course of salad greens with sweet vinegar dressing, and for dessert, bring us a bouquet of truffles dripping with the most delectable jam you can find." with that, the man bowed quickly before he scurried out of the room once again.
almost as quickly as they'd left, servants soon began to pile into the room, carrying an oval-shaped table generously adorned with silverware and plates, along with a bouquet of roses in the center, before placing it onto the ground, being replaced by others who set the dining table with the variety of delicacies arthur had previously ordered. he turned to face her, scanning her features for any type of response, his heart thudding within his chest at the anxiety of the moment. the prince sat with ease, twirling his silverware within his extended fingertips, the smile still resting upon his lips as he leaned forth onto the laced tablecloth, his gaze unmoving.
although he wasn't particularly famined, arthur picked up small morsels of food every now and then, accustomed to the luxurious taste they held. even though he had been bribing her, the prince couldn't help but feel pity, seeing as to how hungry she truly had been. is this what the kingdom had become? people starving upon the streets, willing to break into the royal palace for a sliver of food? he cleared his throat, swallowing slowly before setting down his utensil, a calm aura settling around him as he watched her, his actions gentle and tranquil. arthur waited until she'd finished, before nodding in her direction, shaking the sudden thoughts out of his head. "i will give you everything you please if you accompany me and my guards to find the scepter. you're seemingly... advanced... at scoping things out, so i assume you'd excel in this field." he murmured sheepishly, unable to hold eye contact any longer, his head tilted away from hers, portraying a bold view of his sharp cheekbones and pointed jawline. "if it is your wish to remain hidden from the public's eye, i'll-... we'll do everything in our power to make sure that this is so."
as if he were begging her, the prince reached out across the table, his palms outstretched, a gesture quite uncommon for a nobleman. "please... help us.." he whispered under his breath, wincing at his own words, his features still angled awkwardly away from her own. she had been right all along- how would he truly become a successor to the kingdom if he couldn't keep one of his own prized possessions safe? he had succumbed to begging, a shell of a man whose pride had died away as quickly as it had come.

THEODORA | despite her humiliation, theo couldn't hide the sparkle in her eyes at the very mention of food. her stature, which moments before had been tense and defensive, seemed to relax and something resembling a childlike aura surrounded her. as he listed of a menu consisting of foods theodora thought were merely myths, her heart began to pound in anticipation. he made it sound like it was nothing, naming things like foie gras and truffles as if they were nothing more than a common staple. she didn't even know what such things were-- but she had no doubts that it would be unimaginably delicious.
it was like a switch had flipped. the thought of a decent meal muddled any common sense she retained. if asked, theo probably would have done anything he wished on the spot-- despite her previous arrogance and disparaging remarks. a slice of bed garnished with a bit of jelly would have proved enough for her to spill her deepest, darkest secrets. she could hardly contain her anticipation, fidgeting back and forth, uncrossing and crossing her arms in an impatient rhythm as they waited for her meal. once in awhile she would briefly realize how pathetic it must seem, especially in his eyes, but then her mind would wander back to guessing what lobster really tasted like.
as soon as a chair was brought out for her, theodora moved at the speed of light, a fork and knife in hand before the china touched the table. the sheer aroma was enough to send her into a blissful high. her gleaming eyes followed the food as tray after tray was set down in front of her. even when she was little and frolicked around the castle on a daily basis, she was never fed more than simple broth, fruit juice and occasionally some carrots. arthur would often sneak her treats and pastries from his own meals, which even at such a young age often contained up to six different courses.
she licked her lips, her hostility from moments before vanishing into thin air. a small part of her brain urged the girl to restrain herself and hold some ounce of mannerism and politeness by savoring each bite. but the larger portion of her mind, the part that hadn't even seen anything edible but moldy scraps and rotten apples for days told her to fuck it. she felt like if she didn't eat fast enough, the entire scene in front of her would unravel and prove to be nothing more than a vivid dream. a probable conclusion, considering the situation at hand. as she shovelled the delicacies into her mouth, such questionable thoughts evaporated, replaced by the buttery smoothness of lobster and milky texture of truffles. she didn't peel her eyes off her gourmet heaven, not even to check if the prince was eating his food. for all she knew, it could be laced with poison. not that theodora really minded-- if she died with the aftertaste of lobster linger on her tastebuds, she figured that was a peaceful way to go.
as she slowed her rabid pace, the peasant girl began to notice arthur staring at her, the knowledge that he had won her over written all over his face. using her finger to swipe the last bit of melted butter off her porcelain plate, she stuck it in her mouth, unable to meet his eyes. she was fully aware that her demonstration was far from graceful, instead resembling more of an animalistic nature. nevertheless, she didn't regret a second, even if her face began to turn a darker shade of red. after popping one last truffle into her mouth, she cleared her throat and used the untouched napkin to dab the edges of her lips. as much as she cringed at the thought of displaying one of her more prominent vulnerabilities in such an unpolished manner, theo was incredibly grateful-- even it was no more than a bribe.
"thank you," she mumbled as an attendant removed her dishes, making sure it was clear her comment was not directed at the prince. a sudden sheepishness overcame her as they sat in silence, until he proposed his deal once again. this time, the young man had a clear upper hand. only a little while ago she owed him absolutely nothing besides her unadulterated hatred. there was no way she would turn down an oppurtunity to feast like that again, even if the chance was slim. she didn't answer immediately, looking clearly conflicted over the manner. when he reached his hand out, the shock of the gesture was evident on her features. before she could process her own reaction, theodora reached across the table and grasped it, shaking his hand before quickly recoiling. "very well," she answered, her tone returning to its former haughtiness, but this time laced with more uncertainty. "if you're expecting me to know exactly where the scepter is, i can't help you. but i know a guy who can," she paused, as if once again questioning telling him her sources. "he can be a bit... difficult, so you need to be willing to pay a hefty price," the sense of defeat in her voice was evident as she continued on "i'll get your men where they need to be if you hold your end of the deal. but that's it-- if things start to look bad, i'm gone. you understand that?"
--
as she replayed that fateful conversation in her head, watching she watched the prince board the carriage in front of them, theodora had never experienced such dreadful regret in her entire life. only a few hours had passed, a flurry of packing and preparing an entire entourage of luggage and guards, despite her protests that only fell on deaf ears. they would stick out like a throbbing, red thumb if they passed through the capital, which was the quickest way to reach old man edmund, who ran a pub on the outskirts of the sleric woods. instead, she proposed to the driver that they take a detour, in hopes of avoiding attention. she had decided not to mention that the pub wasn't exactly catered for humans, but that was a bridge they could cross later on. but they were destined to be met with nothing but hostility if they showed up in such an intimidating manner. letting out a distressed, heavy sigh, theodora followed arthur onto the carriage, visibly uncomfortable being cooped up in a small space.
"when we discussed the fine details, nobody mentioned that you would actually be joinin' me. you stick out like a dead, bloated fish in the great saed river," she muttered, the street accent that she had been attempting to hide slipping through as she became more and more anxious. "aren't you suppose to be babysitting the palace?" she shifted in her seat, pulling her small pouch of belongings close to her chest. "when's the last time you've even left? since the days of golden highchairs and silver spoons of baby food?" her spiteful comment was half-hearted, for she was far too busy thinking of every possible escape route for their inevitable failure. |
