[attr="class","box3"]
there was no denying that his eyes traveled up her before meeting her eyes with a gaze similar to that of a fourteen year old boy who was anticipating being yelled at. " there's... a lock on your door." a steady hand moved to turn the lock (four times--the lock moving out, in, out again, and back in) all while hazel eyes zeroed in on her like two lasers, like it was all some kind of power move. he had no room to put the blame on her. but he would never see it that way. with a quick jolt of his neck, he snapped the eye contact, and turned around to leave the girl's room. he shut the door behind him slowly until he heard a latch, and then continued to move away from it--towards the front door. however, the moment he left her line of sight--he felt dizzy. whether or not this was an effect of his lack of sleep was hard to tell, especially since his late-night escapades never affected him to this degree. if the boy wasn't uncomfortable enough, his lightheadedness was paired with the thumping of his heart, and a hotness in his face. jay pulled a face of disgust, and continued his march forward, denying his symptoms of any expected reactions. from there, he made his final steps towards the door (the same one that had been kicked in not twenty-four hours earlier. the damage was apparent, but he didn't stress it. no one in the building had a like-new entry door. it was all part of living in the building) where he propped himself up against a nearby structure (in this case, a wall) and waited with arms tightly folded. for the umptieenth time in the span of twelve long hours, jay gazed upon the walls with an ounce of distress. it was safe to say that before the break in, the area had already been in pretty rough shape. but now he looked at the additional dents, and even holes, as if they were totally preventable. it was all the more reason to leave the apartment fore the day. it was what he needed. the familiar creak of stella's door was cause enough for jay to turn around. of course, this was met with a split second of hesitation. but ultimately, he eventually faced the girl--and was relieved to discovered that she kept her word. it's cold out. he kept the thought to himself, simply to avoid sounding like the overbearing mother he never had. instead, he raised his brows ever so slightly--a facial movement that could easily be translated to a chipper 'ready?' had the connecticut transplant lived with a more vocal-based, less atrabilious roommate. nonetheless, jay was jay. and it made transitions like this a bit easier, because you never had to worry about uncomfortable, meaningless dialogue. sticking true to his character, jay pulled open the door and moved through it all while expecting stella to follow. once he heard the faint click of the door shutting behind him, he picked up the pace. the communal halls were never usually a popular meeting place for anyone who lived in the building. everyone usually scurried fast (or drunkenly slow) to their respective doors where they entered fast, and shut the doors behind them even faster. the only times when the halls were filled with life were when people found themselves caught up in 'crazy' curtis' endless babble, or when something big was happening. a 'lively' neighborhood where someone was getting beat up, stabbed, or even yelled at by an angry parent made for especially nosy neighbors. jay expected that news of what had happened to him had probably traveled at least a block if not two, all without him ever leaving the pseudo comfort of his home. because it was still rather early, he hadn't seen too many signs of gossip--even curtis seemed to going on about anything but. but jay knew it was there. and if it wasn't, it'd be there soon enough. what with his face and all. and, finally, if the local jabber jaws couldn't go off on that alone, surely they'd find jay leaving his apartment with stella interesting enough to talk about. he'd been asked about the raven haired girl walking through the hall more than a few times. even after all this time. it didn't take long for the duo to make it to the sidewalk. all in silence. jay was used to the quiet trek, but it was because he always made it alone. because jay was unsure of how stella fell about it (and he certainly wasn't about to ask), he decided to take matters into his own hands. " did you sleep alright?" it was painfully boring, but he'd be lying if he said he wasn't curious. he was hoping, deep down, that he wasn't responsible for any rest she missed out on that night |

[attr="class","stella"] exiting the ransacked safe haven that was their shared apartment always felt oddly unsatisfying to the nineteen year old, who easily retained a new sense of self-conscious nakedness once she was away from the confining yet familiar yellow-tinted walls. even now, when the ruined establishment could no longer be described as "safe" to the public eye, the anomalous sensation remained, crawling like tiny insects, up and down, underneath the smooth pores of her freshly washed skin. it almost made her itch. maybe it was because she knew, fully and without a doubt, that the world and the surrounding neighborhood was not any better─in fact, it could be defined as worse. at least back in the debris and wreckage of their broken complex, despite the mortifying breach in their peace of mind, there was a sense of familiarity that was still firmly implanted in the building's foundation, something that was clearly impossible to duplicate as they walked down the cracked and abandoned street. in the open clearing and surrounded by the deathly stale air, she felt more vulnerable, especially now that she knew that jay was on the unlisted radar. and by association, she might be too.
regardless, she never paused to consider the possible drawbacks of the previous night's incident on her brooding roommate, who appeared more attentive than usual. halting her train of thought momentarily, stella took a second to turn her head, observing the wounded convict through silent yet pointed green eyes without suspending her paced strides. he was acting out of character─not surprisingly with all things considered─but still, the difference was too great not to notice at a first glance. within a span of twenty-four hours, their interactions, which were nothing more than intervals of stark silence for months, metamorphosed into a morning wake-up call and strung-along plans. it was almost as if he cared suddenly, or maybe it was the apprehension that was driving his actions─that and the fact that he doesn't need another dead body on his consciousness. either way, it's not that stella didn't know what she was signing up for anyway when she signed the lease.
"i wouldn't say alright," she replied, shrugging before she reverted her eyes back onto the dirty, impoverished buildings on their street. huffing out a small breath into the chilly air, she proceeded to stuff her dried hands into the worn cotton of her pants before continuing thoughtfully, "i just... slept." it was true and she was unable to describe it in another sense that would further prove her point. she was exhausted, to the point of utter blackout in the moment that she was able to finally climb into bed. however, had it not been for the intense screaming of her body's biological necessities, the brunette was highly unsure about if the slumber that night would have been nearly as silent and undisturbed.
she choose another momentary lapse, internally debating whether or not it was in good conscious to breach the topic to the burnout. the possibility of conceivably shattering the fragile web that connected the two of them hung heavily over her shoulders, but the factor of curiosity was the deciding component, the catalyst in motioning her to open her mouth again. "you're acting very different than usual. are you alright?" following the question, she dug the blunt edges of her teeth in the soft and delicate skin of her upper lip. once they reached the deserted bus stop, she finally ventured another glance at the twenty-two year old, partially out of the smallest hint of anxiety but largely due to her own growing sense intrigue. when faced with more personal matters, she learned that the young man was more likely than not to run the other way. while she hopelessly desired an answer to the bluntly sudden inquiry, she briefly pondered whether or not he'd be willing to give it or go through great lengths to avoid anything personally concerning his inner workings all together. |

taking to the side walk was never an issue for jay. since he had grown up around the old tan buildings, the overgrown trees (a sight quite unusual for anyone south of central park), and the surplus of cracks/potholes in the roads/sidewalks--he wasn't afraid. and he never understood why people visiting here were. no one was after them. it was the residents who had everything to fear, and yet--everyone kept living. no matter how big the unlisted got, no matter how many of their sons were killed, and no matter how many of their friends were forced out of their homes in handcuffs. jay learned resiliency just by walking the streets of harlem. but today was a little different--that seemed to be the central theme. rather than taking his normal route, he urged stella to take a sharp turn, to enter the darker alleyways to get to where ever they were going. it was a much more daunting path--but that was the idea. no one really traversed the narrow walkways simply because of all the folklore surrounding them. the stabbings, the robbery, the place where people dumped dead bodies--all myths. this was only clear to those who kept their eyes on these kinds of things. the way he entered the space like it was a normal path to take proved that he was one of those people. someone who didn't know jay might assume that he took this specific route out of fear of the surrounding neighborhood in all of its liveliness, in all of its chaos. that he was taking precautions to save his own skin. and while an ounce of that may be true, he was walking in private in an attempt to avoid the eyes of those who he knew personally. it was not uncommon for jay to acquire more than a few bumps and bruises--but this was obviously more than normal. he didn't want anyone thinking that he had been bested by the unlisted--that one of the neighborhood's last lines of defense had lost to a group he often spoke out against. hell, he didn't want people thinking the unlisted were back raising hell period. things had been so quiet over the past couple of weeks, and people were getting optimistic. he didn't want to be the one to take that away from them. he didn't have the right. so he kept to the dank, dark route--and hoped stella would understand. but then again, how could she? wherever she came from, surely it couldn't quite be like this. " at least you slept." he wasn't trying to shut her up, or even look for pity. it was more of a 'things could be worse' situation. that was the ground he liked to take more often than not. it was a good way of ensuring that no one ever got the best of you. regardless of his unusually chatty attitude this morning, he didn't say anything from there. thankfully, stella took it upon herself--and dialogue soon filled the tight quarters they ventured through. unfortunately, it was another prying sentence. she seemed to favor those. he may have been out of character, just like she said, but not so much so that a question regarding him did not phase him. he always felt attacked in one way or another when eyes were looking toward him for the answers he hated handing out the most. perhaps there would be one day where jay wouldn't subconsciously feel this way, but today was not that day. " you don't know me." he said calmly, turning to her as soon as they stopped. people close to jay would often excuse the hurtful things he said--going on about how he didn't know his impact, or that he was an impulsive little monster. maybe both were true when he was a child (although he did carry his heedlessness with him to adulthood), but at this age--he was far more aware of what he was saying. and at times, it was like jay wanted to twist the knife. it was hard to tell if now was one of those times. and if it was, it was certainly uncalled for. stella had been a huge help to him over the past twenty-four hours, and he knew that. why else would he be investing so much into her at this very moment in time? " i'm fine." was his very boring, very bland response. neither of them would have time to stew after jay's bratty response, because the moment they had settled at the edge of the curb--a man much larger than jay was grabbing him--pushing him--back into the closest building (it was quite a ways back from where the two were standing. but the journey there took no time, given the man's power). " --what the fuck," jay managed to utter just after his back hit the wall. soon, a woman followed (her high heels click-clacking against the pavement in a way that suggested she was well off, like she didn't belong here), but she stopped at stella instead. it was hard to tell where exactly they came from, but they must've been in the area. there was no way they could have been followed. at least, not a way jay knew of. although the woman was skinny, she was powerful. she went right for stella's throat, and pinned her up against a streetlamp. " so you're hanging with jay garcia now? you can't have enough, can you?" the woman sneered. her fingers clearly wanted to hold tighter--but for some reason, they didn't. " i told you what i'd do if i saw your pathetic face again. i keep my promises, you little bitch." |

[attr="class","stella"] once again, stella prynne felt the need to roll her eyes. although, this time, not at her enigmatic roommate's atypical rebuff, but rather at herself for expecting anything more from him. without a doubt, she can only describe jay in a singular dimension, with singular designation, due to her completely nonexistent prior and current knowledge on the young man. he was a train traveling towards an inscrutable oblivion, utterly outside of her realm of comprehension and a little beyond her own reach. despite everything that transpired in their destroyed apartment complex, a mere day was simply not enough to shift the void that echoed with the power to move mountains. even years and decades could not dispose of the space jay held between himself and the entirety of the rest of the world--the uncontrollable nullity that seemingly swallowed even the tiniest traces of genuine emotion. and regardless of his apparent consideration for her safety that particular morning, an occurrence that resonated as something unreservedly out of character for the twenty-two year old, it doesn't make for an entire change in disposition. truthfully, she didn't know exactly what she was hoping for anyway.
observing him another blunt look, this time, she pursed her lips in an expression that resembled little less than a purely childish pout. his blithe dismissal quickly caused her to feel the smallest hint of embarrassment, adorn with an apologetic sensation--not that she'll ever dare to let it show in her exterior composition. "i did not mean to offend you," she stated curtly, feeling the grueling edges of inner irritation pointed directly towards herself for ruining the moment. the translation was as vivid and shown as plainly as the peak of day, in which his previously, more unguarded stance metamorphosed into the usual stiffness that accompanied the burnout's daily brigade. it was an attitude that closely resembled the facade of before, in which the two shared little more than blanketed glimpses of one another from afar. the progress, triggered by the injurious trauma, was suddenly reverted, almost as if never actually occurring in the first place. suddenly, she had an undeniable urge to shake new yorker senseless.
however, before she was able to insert another word, the nineteen year old was cut off, abruptly and unexpectedly, by the manifestation of a sudden figure--someone with an indisputably familiar composure and dangerous aura. the following moments felt like an eternity, as stella stood utterly immobile--eyes dilating as the image of the woman became frighteningly clear in her field of vision. internally, she felt every inch of her lungs contracting heavily against her will, almost to the point of triggering an outright panic attack, as she watched the older woman approach her with a deadly sense of purpose. her heels echoed along the broken pavement like the haunting sound of bells, ringing loud and clear for the teenager's execution. stella was unable to move--not as her eyes visualized the lady's slender figure becoming larger and larger as she closed in on the proximity. not even as the her red-polished, claw-like acrylics closed in around the delicate flesh of stella's throat.
she suddenly felt the air evaporate from her lungs as her respiratory airways were being constraint with tortuously agonizing precision. as the woman pinned her shorter frame onto the decrepit streetlamp, the unanticipated pain to her trachea was harrowing, enough to immediately numb her whole body below the focal point. however, it was also enough to snap her out of the trance. clenching her teeth together forcefully, the teenager quickly used her depreciating strength to claw at the her attacker's arms. "li-ll-i-an," she stuttered softly through a series of muffled chocking noises that continued to involuntarily escaped her parted lips.
the short utter was enough to cause the grip on her neck to loosen the slightest bit, enough for her to receive a trickle of air into her dwindling lungs. with a quick realization of her surroundings, her eyes flickered swiftly to jay, who was apprehended and held tightly a short distance away by a behemoth of a man, before returning to the lady, lillian, and locking with hers. the following seconds passed silently and without pause, stella finding her own slack grasp on the woman's slim wrists as she began to view miniaturized flickering stars coating her vision. "y-your pr-om-ise to k-kill me," she continued, this time, it was somehow more steadily than before. her voice was nothing more than a whisper, gently lifted in the stale breeze when she finally dared to say, "do it." she was playing a frighteningly perilous game by calling out the bluff, one that ended in probability that the typical human being would be unable to risk. furthermore, stella was simply in no position for risky negotiations with fate. but, due to past experiences, she knew the woman. she knew exactly the type of despicable person she was.
the expression on lillian's face transformed from confident to something that peeked the very edge of outrage. the clutch on her neck tightened immediately, even as stella strayed along the thin line of consciousness. it caused her state to worsen, her head physically feeling like it consisted of little else but the thin air. however, a moment more and the excruciating sensation was lifted entirely, as if vanishing like heavy cigarette smoke, leaving the brunette to sink to the ground, coughing loudly as her lungs greedily grasped at the prevalent oxygen that was obtainable once more. beside her, the woman expelled a harsh, lingering bout of laughter before kicking the downed girl in her side, causing her to fall over with a pained thud. "i won't give a whore like you that sort of satisfaction," she said maniacally before signaling for her underling to release the other captive, "not when there's something so much worse in store." she took a second to examine her pristine manicured nails for wear, and, without a second glance, marched off once she was finished, the large darkly-cladded man following like a hellish servant behind her. the only audible sound was the metallic clinging of heels on the gray pavement.

[attr="class","box3"]
the leviathan of a man was overkill to say the least. while jay held himself at the above average height of six feet, it was widely known that he was quite skinny. there was no doubt about it that in a test of muscle, anyone who weighed more than two hundred pounds would best jay in a hurry--and the man in black was no exception. and he knew it, too. because there was this awful, twisted smile on his face while jay squirmed in a way any person would in a situation would. "you're not going anywhere," the man spoke out, his voice rich and deep. but his words didn't stop jay from slithering, reaching for anything he could. initially, he thought of the knife somewhere in the pocket of his backpack. a nice clean stab would be enough to shock the man, get him to step back. it'd allow him to make an escape, but surely enough it'd leave the lackey pissed and bloody. and jay had no idea what the woman commanding him would do. she certainly wasn't kind, what with the way she grabbed at stella's throat. his second option wasn't much better. it was his gun, the same one he had taken with him from the apartment. he knew very ell he had enough bullets to take the man and woman out--quickly too. the old one two. but it'd be loud, bloodier, and far more shocking. especially in broad daylight. he had packed it as a last resort, to deal with anyone aligned with the unlisted. and he was having a hard time figuring out who exactly either of these strangers worked for, why they knew his name, or why they seemed to have it out for stella. as he watched the woman continue to mistreat his roommate all while laughing, jay was beginning to consider the gun. it was the heat in his head speaking. but before he could find himself plummeting to new lows, the large man pulled back, and began to walk away like nothing had happened. jay could have moved on with his day after wiping away any unsightly creases, but that just wasn't him. at this point, he was full of anger, and the only way to release it was to vent--or act on it. and jay wasn't much of a talker. so he moved forward with a plan in his steps, and scooped up the biggest rock he could find. in this case, it was a chunk of cement--but he was satisfied with the mass. jay taking stance was smooth, and flowed effortlessly. soon he was in the position of what looked like a professional pitcher. his torso moved gradually with his hands and arms all while right foot maintained balance. jay huffed out a big breath of air through his nose, and tossed the rock with great force--watching as it slammed against the giant man's head. a sliver of crimson liquid forced its way through a slit that jay could see from the sidewalk. and like clockwork, the man felt his head, and turned around in an instant. the woman followed, her menacing eyes assessing the situation until finally she broke out into a small smile paired with a laugh--like she thought the display was endearing in a childlike way. jay spit in the direction of the two strangers, and she smiled bigger before the two finally turned around to continue their walk to wherever the hell they came from. " fuck you!" jay roared, his vocal chords stinging as a direct result of the exertion they were experiencing. the quick breath of air that followed felt ghost-like after such a sound. everything about the scene felt so much quieter after lillian and her goon left the area. but jay was still riding a wave of adrenaline. this time it was put towards something he should have focused on originally--stella who lay on the ground, defeated and sad. jay moved towards her fast, his hands working to scoop her up from the sidewalk. " jesus christ, stella," he whispered between the two of them while pulling her back into his lap. careful hands dusted away the specks of dirt and pebbles stuck on her face and arm. a concerned gaze fixed on his face while searching for anymore traces or wounds--just like she had done for him hours before--until finally his stare met hers. in a split second, all the questions he wanted to ask surged through his head. 'who was that', 'what was that', 'how did she know you', 'why did she hurt you'... but the one that came naturally to him made itself known through dialogue. " are you okay?" hazel eyes moved back and forth quickly, like they were searching to read her facial expression in the event that she did not answer him. the second question followed after little delay. " can you stand?" it was silly considering, he didn't see the woman make any significant blows to stella's legs that would render her immobile. but the way that she was laying against the cement made jay wonder. but it was all because he was beginning to rise, and he intended on rising with her. but it wasn't like he needed an answer--because as he stood, he pulled her up with him. his arms held her up as much as they needed to--up until her legs took over. a surge of guilt moved through him as the wave of adrenaline soon began to let him down just like any other high. jay could handle physical blows, no problem. but seeing others in his place? it was rough. and he felt guilty for it--like he had everything to do with it. regardless of the fact that the encounter seemed purely internal, or the fact the he knew neither of the assailants. " do you want to go back?" the same prying eyes continued to scan her for an answer. " we can go back." he immediately began to reroute his day--plan it for another. his sources wouldn't be happy to hear, but jay didn't much care for their emotions. it's not like they cared about his. they simply weren't in that kind of business. " or," jay began alternatively. " we can get something to eat?" in that moment, jay moved to show jay the wallet he had snatched from the goon. " big ugly's paying." jay offered a toothy smile in an attempt to lift her spirits. |

[attr="class","stella"] stella remained motionless on the cold pavement as the echoing clicks of heels slowly began to fade into the distance, feeling the soft flesh of her insides throb with newly blossoming pain from the assault. her mouth remained slightly ajar, as though air was going to escape her at any time, and her breath remained labored, unnatural. that was followed closely by a numbness that crawled like an invisible chill throughout the nerves beneath her skin. she could hardly feel the ground, which shoved uncomfortably against her face and body. however physically, nothing felt more rattled than her reeling train of thought, which is seemingly running haywire with the newly rationalized information from the incursion. the sensation felt like the resemblance of dazed intoxication as it reverberated and resonated along the delicate stippling of her cranium.
she was lost in her blanketed consciousness, to the point where she hardly felt the sensation of being lifted from her position and shifted gently by another tangible body. instead her eyes stared blankly into a distant space as she allowed her roommate to assess her physical appearance, handling her swiftly yet gingerly as if caring for a loved one on the brink of death. she was vaguely aware of the prevalent, unconcealed concern that displayed plainly in his hazel eyes, of the way he spoke--bluntly perturbed and partially hysterical from being shoved entirely outside of his realm of control. although she could hardly recall how, jay managed to helped her onto her feet, holding her up though steady arms. suddenly the world felt too big for the girl, who is still seemingly unable to grasp the abrupt turn of events regardless of the method in which it presents itself to her.
a couple minutes more and she was finally grasping at the surface of reality, instantaneously shoving the young man away from her with a rough and drunken push that might have taken him by surprise. "get off me! don't fucking touch me!" she breathe as if noticing him for the first time, sounding almost breathless in her efforts. the raven-haired girl took a few hesitant steps, the violent action causing her to stumble clumsily, nearly tumbling back onto the hard ground before she caught herself heavily by her side on the aged brick of a nearby building. her limbs still felt like jell-o, uncontrollable still due to the insufficient amounts oxygen traveling within her body, but she was able to hold herself up with the added support, requiring a few more minutes to recuperate from the ordeal.
with the shock still coursing through her system, stella merely turned to rest her back on the establishment, leaning her head back exasperatedly and brought her fingers to rest harshly against her temple. there was the makings of a fresh bruise against the sensitive skin. "fuck, fuck, fuck, she's back," she mumbled incoherently before grinding her teeth in further frustration. at the rationalization, a precipitous rush of anger flooded through her like a shot of adrenaline. she had thought that she was able to escape, having previously accomplished the seemingly impossible feat. however, in light of the recent events, the idea that, somehow, her history was finally catching up with her was something almost unbearable to even try and comprehend. the sensation was fleeting as it left almost as quickly as it arrived, but it was enough to completely bring her back to the real world from the previously surreal experience.
for a moment, she seemingly forgot that jay was even there, until she finally lifted her gaze to meet his troubled eyes. the nineteen year old finally decided to get off of the wall, finally feeling primed to be able to walk again on her own. this time, she approached him with a renewed resolve, immediately grabbing his wrist before turning and continuing their excursion from exactly where they left off. "i'm not going back. i'll be fine." she replied eventually--although not precisely reassuring--after a span of silence. nevertheless, she complied with his other suggestion, pulling him into the closest restaurant that dared cross their path. it was a neighbor hamburger joint that served with familiarly unfriendly customer service and more grease on their food than any other. |

the longer she went without a response, the more jay's face warped into a look of confusion as if to say 'work with me' without really saying it. his empathetic range, while passionate when it reared it's head, was limited. disgustingly limited. he could only spit out a few kind, encouraging words before he too began to feel his stomach twisting--but rather than panic, it was frustration. and unfortunately, the frustration was coddled the second stella pressed her hands against his chest to push him away from her. " shit stella," he exclaimed as he stumbled backwards. he eventually found his footing, and looked at her with a fighting gaze. like the ram he was, an airy snort was forced out of his nostrils while he quickly contemplated his next move. right then, he was juggling between turning around and leaving her (after, of course, he got a few last dagger-like words in)--or staying, waiting out this panic attack she was having--and hoping for whatever followed to be positive. god knew they desperately needed something good to go for them. and that was his motivation to stick with the ladder. " just fucking breathe, it's not that hard," it was partly advice he knew he should have been taking, but it was clear in his pointed gaze that he was speaking to the dark-haired girl. obviously, jay wasn't the best person to be left in the hands of in times like these. childhood trauma was always the card that was drawn for him by others in an attempt to excuse his behavior--and to be fair, it was an understandable move to make. but that didn't mean he wasn't being harsh. an he knew he was being harsh. he wasn't about to pull back on it, either. he meant what he said. it was one of the things he subconsciously picked up from his father, and one of the fewer things that he carried with him into adulthood. but that had everything to do with the boy not getting professional help to identify his undesirable traits--and even if he had gotten that help, he would have only ever taken it as criticism that he didn't need. jay sighed, a calming sigh this time. just before stella had attempted to convince him that she was calm. jay continued to give her a twisted look that suggested that he didn't believe her--but it wasn't like he had a choice. because soon enough, the girl was gripping onto his wrist like he was a child. but he didn't make any further comments, and he sure as hell didn't fight her as soon as she started to move forward with his wrist in her grip. her strides led her to the closest food place--like this was all her idea. truthfully, he didn't mind her taking charge. infact--if he was in a better mood, he would have surely quipped something about 'liking a woman in control' but he kept his words to himself. like a pouty kid as they slipped into a booth by the window. naturally, more than a few eyes were on them as they made their entrance, but they were friendly faces. jay wasn't concerned. they all watched for a moment or two before retiring to whatever they were doing before the pair strode in. the choir of dismissive stares gave him what he needed to do his own thing--which revolved around the menu a pretty girl with a nasty look on her face handed over to him. he pretended to be interested in the items he had seen dozens of times before, considering each option like it was his job to. but eventually, his fake attention on the laminated menu burned out, and the new yorker soon placed it on the table so that he could look at his shaken up roommate while she continued to calm herself. her efforts made him feel briefly guilty for how he handled things, but he wasn't about to apologize for something that basically happened forever ago, right? he pulled his elbows up from his sides to place them against the wooden surface. from there, jay intertwined his fingers, and rested the front of his chin against them. " so are you going to tell me anything about what just happened?" he figured it wasn't too soon now that she had her token panic attack over the matter. " is that how you say hi to each other in connecticut or some shit?" his tone was light, joking. obviously he was trying to lighten the mood. he got bored of playing pouty--and he decided it was what he was good at. |

[attr="class","stella"] they entered the restaurant and was immediately flooded by a sea of eyes, curious and neighborly eyes from the atypical people who see them normally. she felt them easily, boring dark holes onto the surface of her delicate skin and inching their way past the primitive facade. it was a normal occurrence that happened relatively often since she's moved to harlem, seeing that the majority of the population always somehow found themselves pondering the whereabouts of one jay garcia anyway. people always stared when the mystifying young man entered a room, and by pure default, their eyes ultimately straying to the equally bewildering female that seemingly laid on his arm, especially seeing that it was one of the only public outings that they shared. regardless, the dark-haired girl remained in an awkward silence as they approached a small corner booth, still forced back and forth between reality's facade and the trembling consciousness of her imagination.
she was still feeling an irreconcilable numbness ebbing at her spirit, one that kept the vivid sparkle in her eye at bay and withheld the movement of her tongue like transparent restraints. even the tiny characters and low-graded images on the plastic menu appeared as mere pixelated shapes to the girl's fogged vision. it wasn't until their waitress, an irritated young woman, cleared her throat that stella finally found her footing, immediately flinching in her seat before meeting the waitress's burning gaze. she apologized in a short mumble before grazing over the presented choices and wordlessly pointing at a random image of a greasy burger and fries. then the menu was practically ripped from her grip as the impatient woman proceeded to storm away, heading towards the back of the establishment as though she had more to accomplish than simply waiting tables.
truthfully, the nineteen year old was thankful for jay's level of consideration, in that he was able to withhold himself from the burning inquiries that were likely consuming his visual concentration. his confusion was completely understandable, especially seeing that the girl, herself, didn't appear to reveal much information without further prodding. however deep down, she found herself desperately wishing that, somehow, he understood, that somehow, he could comprehend her unique situation that created her extensive web of horrible lies, but they were only human and someone like jay garcia was no different. the twenty-four year old was swift to claim the first question a couple moments after another weighted wave of quietness settled over them, the words seemingly opening the floodgates that he was seemingly waiting for.
she realized that his tone was one of lighthearted diligence, possibly forceful in nature as a means of tiptoeing over the chaotic minefield of stella's emotions, but it did little in satisfying the purpose. she felt another ripple of distressed washed over her in which she mentally shoved aside before it had the ability to overwhelm her again. swallowing anxiously, she kept her arms stiffly to her side as she finally came to meet his awaiting gaze, hers expressing a more distant, unreadable viridescence.
"her name is lillian and she's always been... jealous of me..." she answered, finding her voice as outwardly less shaken than before. stella realized quickly afterwards that it was likely not the response that her companion was looking for. he desired something concrete, a clear reasoning that he could easily wrap beneath his belt like most of the other controllable factors in his life. however the dark-haired girl was simply unable to supply the required necessity, not without finding herself lost in a destructible war with too many unmanageable component that could lead to her ultimate downfall. nonetheless, she settled on the cryptic words like a security blanket─as they were neither entirely truthful nor anything close to foolhardy lies. "i guess she's not exactly the best person to have as an enemy," she continued before shrugging carelessly, almost hopelessly. the situation wasn't stella's fault, not completely, but there was very little she could do in the face of all that was said and done.

a crease between his brow developed all while he leaned in close to await an answer from the connecticut transplant. both of his forearms rested flat on the surface of the table, and hood remained over his head for no other reason besides his forgetfulness. hazel eyes watched the look of distress in her eyes, and then traveled down to her lips that shaped themselves into a subtle frown. why was she so uneasy? the question caused his brows to furrow further. nevertheless, he let he finish. however, not without a look on his face that continued to drill and wonder why this had happened at all. once more, he found himself at a fork in the road. he could've asked why she didn't fight back, or comfort her further--because clearly... she needed it. while jay wasn't sure if he was the best qualified for it, he rushed forward anyways. " i'm gonna let you in on a little secret," he was briefly interrupted by the hasty delivery of their food, but he didn't bother pulling his gaze away from his dark haired roommate. " skinny little bitches like her don't have any power here." he was more so worried about the giant man she commanded, but even then he had to be brainless. and it wasn't like guys like him we're impossible to take down. he could do it himself if he had to, he just... wouldn't like it. it promised to be painful on jay's end--and that was the only thing he could really be sure of. regardless of the chaotic thoughts he was coming across, his index and thumb took hold of a single steak fry in a casual form. it was then placed between his teeth where he took a clean bite. " i wouldn't let her get under your skin." jay finally leaned back into the booth, his elbows moving away from the table where they rested. it was at this moment in time where he properly recalled the hood over his head. and with his spurt of remembrance, he pulled the black hood from his head like the grim reaper at the doorstep of another victim. except this time it wasn't... frightening... but more so concerning. the battle wounds from the day before finally made their first public appearance--and anyone who cared to continue their gaze on him and his roommate surely had mixed feelings on the sight. you see, he was undeserving of a crowd that expressed pure sympathy--because he had it coming. but then again, he wasn't deserving of a crowd that expressed nothing but joy when seeing him in pain--because he wasn't completely scum of the earth. at least that was the popular opinion. at this point in time, eyes had been pulled away from them since their initial arrival--but the eyes that were on them counted the most. from across the dinner, a yell could be heard it was the voice of a woman, and she traveled to the booth they sat at with a mixture of fury and worry in her toes. " my god, jay." was how the older woman introduced herself as soon as she arrived at the end of their table. " what is all of this?" she moved in close to get a better look, obviously these two were familiar with one another--because while jay did pull away from her, it wasn't in the way one would handle a stranger. it was more so in a way a young child would handle an over-affectionate aunt. he had the grimace down and everything. this, of course, did not stop the woman to examining until she had enough. and then her worried eyes traveled to stella, and she rolled eyes at jay. " another one?" she groaned. and then the woman leaned in towards stella. " garcia men are as unloyal as they come. don't waste your time, sweetheart." and like an overactive chihuahua, the woman looked to jay, all while moving into the booth next to him. he had no choice but to make room for her, she wasn't going to stop and he knew it. " so where'd you find this one? she a model? do you model, honey?" her eyes jumped from jay to stella in a heartbeat. jay laughed lightly while his head drooped in defeat. but in no time, his chin rose once more and he looked to stella with sleepy eyes. " you know, inette. she found me. my roommate ad. she's my roommate." it was best to kill any ideas inette had as early on as possible. |

[attr="class","stella"] truthfully, she was trying desperately to omit the experience from her current stream of consciousness, yielding little to no results. it wasn't due to the impact of her partial strangulation, but rather the likelihood of further confrontation. if lillian knew about her whereabouts, then that must mean that it was only a matter of time before he knew, which was a wholly terrifying revelation that had her every fiber of her being trembling. to think she may have found a safe haven, an escape to the imprisonment of her former life, and have it all taken away in the matter of minutes--seconds even. she was likely getting ahead of herself at that point, with her mind already racing at a hundred miles per hour. there were various other elements to take into consideration--all of which were not relevant enough to coagulation immediately into the least viable yet most paralyzing conclusion. but there was no stopping the worrisome thoughts in their tracks when they had already began to consume viciously. it caused her to shift comfortably in her seat, suddenly feeling overtly shy beneath jay's concerned gaze.
regardless, by the look on her roommate's face, it didn't appear like he believed her either, not when she currently held a minimally performing mental capacity that could rival a young child's. he was trying to provide some support for the distressed girl, something that stella, even in her tormented state, was still easily able to notice. it was completely uncharacteristic of the young man, and something she found herself inadvertently appreciating. however he didn't know the petite woman in question--not like she had. he wasn't familiar with the manipulative and devious soul that laid beneath the alluring exterior. she was the living embodiment of a demon reincarnate, from her personality right down to the vicious glow in the depths of her eyes, and stella truly wished, with all her heart, that he would never have to witness her capabilities.
she immediately bit her lip afterwards, hard enough to break the delicately dry skin and draw the smallest hint of blood from the tiny vessels. because as much as she was tempted to believe his beguiling words, she knew better from previous experience, she knew nothing good ever comes out from an interaction with lillian. "no, i don't think you underst-" she tried to say, tried to convince him that the initial notions were ill-conceived at the the least, but she was quickly cut off by the shrill exclamation of a woman from across the restaurant. if anyone wasn't looking at the pair prior to that point, they surely were after, now that she clearly diverged the attention back onto them with the siren of her voice.
she seemed harmless, a mere bystander in the course of jay's life who seemingly desire a peek at the inside, and by the looks of his reaction to her approach, the twenty-four year old appeared to be familiar with her company--slightly irritated but still unexpectedly civil nevertheless. promptly, stella shut her mouth to avoid being caught by surprise, and as her eyes drafted to the cooling food on the table, she briefly wondered jay's relation to the woman, seeing that she was already knowledgeable of, not only him, but his family as well.
once the woman slid into the booth beside jay, stella's eyes quickly shifted to meet hers, which were smothering with a mixture of purely childish curiosity and the smallest hint of sympathy. she clearly thought the two were an item and that the nineteen year old was no better than any of the other ones that constituted his past, an assumption likely shared by all of the fleeting eyes in the establishment. and while jay clearly found annoyance in the pre-existing perception, stella observed it with a bit of fondness that the woman bothered to care in the first place. she welcomed the innocuous interaction in light of the previous events.
the raven-haired girl plastered a dazzling smile on her features in response, one that didn't quite reach her eyes. the woman, as expected, didn't notice another beneath the superficial appearance. "no, ma'am, i'm not a model," she answered earnestly, "and we're just roommates. i recently moved to new york, so jay has been showing me around." the older lady's gaze quickly turned skeptical, seemingly disbelieving in the likelihood that such an irreproachable notion could be associated with someone like jay garcia. regardless, after a few moments, she simply accepted the words as the truth for the time being, having no other evidence to show otherwise. she settled with changing the topic, first gushing more about stella's appearance before deciding to educate the supposedly unknowing girl on the basis of garcia men and their atypical characteristics. |
